Telling the Kiddos You're Expecting

Well, my pants are starting to get a bit snug and I'm 15 weeks pregnant now.  I figured it was a good time to tell the students and families, especially since people (school staff) were starting to find out.  We're a pretty small school and I wanted my students to hear it from me.  If I had told my staff first, the parents would have known and then my students would be the last to hear.  So I decided last night to tell them and put something quick together this morning.  We talked about inference on Monday and I thought I would tie that into telling them 1) so as not to waste precious teaching time and 2) because they would not see it coming.

I had these clues up on the Smartboard one at a time.  If they felt like they couldn't infer anything about me or the situation, then they put their finger in the air to tell me they were ready for the next clue.

One student said, "I infer Mrs. H is going on a diet because the evidence states her pants won't fit and she likes to eat.  I know that when this happens to people, they realize they need to diet."  Pretty good, huh?

Well, when the last two clues came up, it was pretty obvious.  Only a few were smiling at their inference as they wrote it down.  Most still thought it was just a lesson at first until I said it was true.  Then they proceeded to tell me I should name the kid after them with "Junior" afterwards.  Too cute.  As I expected, most boys wanted me to have a boy and most girls wanted me to have a girl.

The rest of the day resulted in them telling other students and teachers they knew. They were pretty excited to know "the secret" before other teachers in the building.  So... I did send out an email to the staff at the end of the day since I felt it was about time.  Haha.

By the way, here's what I have been craving and eating for weeks now.  The trick is to get the milk ICE cold.  I put this cup in the freezer for a few minutes before eating it. YUM!!!

What I'm eating now while typing.  It was 10:30pm last night when I had a sudden craving for fried rice.  First time craving this.  I've been thinking about Chinese food all day at work and now I'm happy.  :)

Next step?  Email the kids' families and put it in my newsletter.  The kids said they wanted to be the ones to tell their families, so I told them I wouldn't say anything until tomorrow.  Okay, now I'm full, but it's time for bananas in milk!
